Self-check: Are you sinking, surviving, or thriving?
One guarantee in life is that everyone navigates these stages and at times, all at once. Whether you’re sinking, surviving, or thriving; burnout, depression, anxiety, relational difficulties, motivational challenges, and a wide spectrum of emotional responses often coincide or follow navigation. Stages and responses can be triggered by and manifest in both our personal and professional lives yet, some more easily identify their personal vs. professional stage(s). Why is that?
There may be several reasons and intersecting factors; however, the easily missed signs of workplace depression could be a contributing factor. While your job may not be the direct cause of your current stage(s), much like our personal environments, work environments contribute to and can impact our overall well-being and outlook. For people already predisposed to experiencing depression, or those already living it, an unhealthy or unhelpful work environment can contribute to, or worsen the way they experience these stages and may lead to a feeling of being stuck or stagnant.
When we feel stuck or stagnant, it is important to have reliable support we trust. Why? Ever watch a movie, read a book, or learn of a situation where someone is engaging in an activity that you know will lead to their demise? You have context they don’t and try as you might to warn them via telepathy, they still end up in the trap —oy! Well, other than the fact that the character or person can’t receive the signals you’re sending via telepathy, what it demonstrates is that your vantage point and detachment from the situation allows you to have a perspective that they don’t. The ability to have a different perspective and through that lens support the solutioning needs of others is one of the many reasons we’re advocates for coaching and other supportive processes!
One of the main differences between your support of the person described above and the coach/coachee (person being coached) relationship is the ability to directly communicate. Direct communication with a trusted support in the form of a coach is a powerful and transformative experience. As people who coach, have been coached, and are actively being coached, we too can attest to the transformative nature of the process as we’ve witnessed clients in one or two sessions solution their way out of situations and mindsets they’d been stuck in for weeks, months or years. Simply put, the coaching process is grounded in self-discovery and therefore leads to greater self-awareness, self-trust, and ultimately self-actualization. #Gem-Tastic!
Another noteworthy difference between your use of “telepathy” and the coach/coachee dynamic is that coaches aren’t personally attached to the topics a client chooses (always client choice) to bring to session and as a result are able to maintain objectivity. Objectivity allows for targeted assessment, (re)evaluation, shifts in perspective, and actionable plans regardless of whether or not your current stage(s) is being triggered by or manifesting within a personal and/or professional context.
